Welcome to Our Gardening Information Website Please Read Below First:- A Welcome Message from: Jeff Henshaw This website welcomes all gardeners and people with an interest in gardening, as well as those who just enjoy the experience of looking at, visiting and walking through a nice garden. We try to cater for everyone here and you can send your thoughts about the website (including the things that you liked, what you did not like and anything that you would like to see included) directly to us. We welcome your feed back and we will take into consideration everything that you say, whether negative or positive, in order to improve the website for the benefit of everyone. If you are a gardening beginner, then there will be many things that you will want to learn. This website will try to provide much of the knowledge that you require to develop both your interest in gardening and your talent as a competent gardener. Those gardeners who are more experienced and competent may perhaps either want to try out some new garden techniques, new garden styles, new types of flora, or find answers to some of those annoyingly puzzling questions of why this or that won't grow here or there! We welcome questions, posts and contributions from all our visitors, but especially from experienced gardeners, regardles of the type of gardening that interests you. The most important thing to know about gardening, is to understand the climate, weather and soil in the area that you live in. Many countries assign "garden zones" which assist the gardener in knowing the best types of flowers, plants, vegetables, herbs, grasses, shrubs and trees that will grow well in your area. These zones are segregated based mainly on the amount of heat, precipitation (rainfall, hail and snow) that an area gets, and when the first and last frost are likely to fall. Some people get a bit confused over the difference between climate and weather. Climate is the over arching "long term weather pattern" measured over a vast period of time, so you may live in a Mediterranean, Tropical, Arctic, or in many other climate areas. These climates will be unlikely to change for thousands of years. Weather, on the other hand, is the local day to day, or week to week stuff - is it likely to rain today or tomorrow? The weather last year was much better than this year! To confuse the issue further, there are also micro climates. Every garden is unique, as none occupy the same space, so there will be different degrees of shade, for example from the house and surrounding buildings and other plants, especially shrubs and trees. These and other factors will also affect below ground water levels and soil quality. The soil quality and types of soil in an area are very important, but are beyond the scope of this introduction. You will find more information by exploring the website. The successful gardener must and will always take all of the above factors into account. Finally, so as not to frighten off the new gardener, please be aware that as a general rule of thumb most flowers, plants, vegetables, herbs, grasses, shrubs and trees purchased at your local garden center, should grow quite successfully in your garden or allotment. If you are in doubt however, about whether you should make a particular purchase, do check the the Ph level of the soil (you can learn about that on the website) and discuss your garden and planting ideas with a qualified member of staff. You may copy and reprint virtually all of the articles on this website (apart from the one above, of course!). Before doing so however, you must adhere to our terms of service and abide by any specific terms and conditions specified by the authors of the articles. | |
